Ancillary coverage

Yesterday's explosion got me thinking. A lot of the interns did great work covering the main bars -- who, what, when, where, why and how -- but a lot of the rest of us, if we were working on the story, were doing ancillary work.

I helped out with a story about how the blast affected different people and businesses by calling the Mary Kay people and a number of downtown hotels.

All in all, though, it was still exciting to be working on breaking news, even if I wasn't in the thick of it.

What about the rest of you? What did you think of the experience?

Yesterday's events were exciting. After we heard the sounds of the first explosions, Kimberly Durnan and I ran through the newsroom, down the back stairs and to her car. We drove about 90 mph over there. She drove the wrong way on I35 to try to get close enough to shoot video. Fire balls were shooting up into the sky like geysers. Cops and firefighters soon ordered us to move back about 1,000 feet. As soon as the fire died down, so did the excitement. But I really enjoy covering breaking news. It's an adrenline rush.
It's just amazing that no one was seriously injured or killed, except for those poor dogs.

My contribution consisted of e-mailing this to co-workers:

I know it's nowhere near the same, but the images and sounds made me think of that article.

But, in non-explosion related news, I have not one but TWO articles running tomorrow!
