You do what with Fritos here?
I love Apple pie. It’s probably my favorite dessert. Because pie is dessert, right?
Not always.
One of the most important things I’ve learned since arriving in Texas almost two weeks ago is that pie can be a dinner too. I know, it may sound a little stupid of me, but really, I’ve never had anything called a “pie” that was an entrée.
My roommate changed that last night when she introduced me to Frito pie, which I am told is a Texas staple. She handed me a dish and told me I could put the Fritos on the top of bottom. I tried bottom. I threw on some cheddar cheese and took the plunge.
It was amazing. And it’s simple to make, so I see many more Frito pies in my future.
The best thing? In today’s Taste section there is an entire history of Frito pie and recipes. I’m taking it back to California with me later this summer. Maybe I can spread the Frito pie craze on the West Coast.

Yes, beans were involved. But I personally I had no idea chili even existed without beans. Sheltered? No, not really. I've just never had chili without beans...
