What about Paris?

I should be ashamed. But I couldn’t get through a day of Soprano references without bringing up my favorite shouldn’t-be celebrity: Paris Hilton. She’s back in police custody now, serving out her sentence.

Thinking about Paris sitting in her jail cell makes me ponder my own need for scandal headlines and somewhat unbiased Hollywood news. It’s probably because I’m from California. I love reading about Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck’s daughter, Violet, Alexa Lee Joel’s gripe with celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, and other tasty tidbits that aren’t of any impact to my life.

I am ashamed actually.

My friend and fellow journalist Elizabeth has a similar obsession. One day, while we were being voyeurs on one of those celebrity Web sites, I asked her if we could call ourselves journalists when we liked this sort of “garbage.”

“It’s an escape,” she said.

I don’t know about my fellow interns, but every now and then, I need an escape.

Anytime I think of Paris Hilton, it makes me angry. A few weeks ago, I was so excited that she was going to jail. Here, finally, a quasi-celebrity who wasn't above the law! But it got me to thinking: Why is it that celebs get made examples of for minor offenses (i.e. driving without a license, insider trading), while others can get away with biggies like drug possession, child molestation, and even murder? When I heard Paris was going back to jail I thought, "Haha! Justice!" But then I realized that with all the stuff I just mentioned, in Hollywood, I guess there is none.

Hey, go-to-guy, I wouldn't exactly say that insider trading is a "minor offense."

True, but wouldn't you consider, in the grand scheme of things, that it's not as big a deal as say, murdering your wife and her friend and fleeing the scene in your SUV when the police come to question you or bringing a child over to your ranch and paying the family off?

O.J. was innocent.

I just want my glove back.
