Interns on fire!

Sosa Game.jpg
Not literally, though that might make a cooler post.

I'm referring to the Sunday edition and its heavy intern presence. From Mike and Derek holding down the front page to Tara's dominant spread in Guide, this weekend was hard to beat.

I also wanted to post a bit about the Rangers game I covered for Sosa's 600th, but never had time to blog about. I arrived about two hours earlier than I needed to, which led to a lot of time spent wandering around the ballpark, and roughly the same amount of time eating out of boredom in the press box during BP. Here's what the view is like from the box, by the way. Nice, no?

My assignment was to interview whoever caught the 600th ball, so I spent almost the entire game wandering around left field, hoping I would be in the right spot. I should also add that along left field, there is a very large dark black advertisement painted on the wall. I stood along the wall with the heat radiating on to my back all night, working up a pretty good sweat.

Then, lo and behold, Sosa gets a hold of one and it goes flying -- to right field. I ran around the concourse and arrived to find that it had landed in the bullpen. So who do you interview?

Brandyn Greer, apparently. He was the closest fan to catching the ball, and the best lead I had. He was an okay interview, except for when a few girls from my former high school walked by screaming at me and trying to talk mid interview. Kind of ruined my credibility with the interviewee, but it reminded me I was on a fun assignment.

It's the little things that keep you grounded.

You know what would've been cool? If you had caught the 600th! Then you could've interviewed yourself, thus making your job a lot easier.

If I had caught the 600th, I can pretty much guarantee my new $50k-$60k pet and I wouldn't have quite made it in to work.

Great nickname idea from Mike Mooney for Matthew:
Cold Hearted Haag
Because if you read FrontBurner, you know he loves tragedy. I saw him dropping a box of kittens into quicksand while he cackled with glee over the weekend. True story.

The Sosa thing ended up being somewhat anticlimatic, if you don't count the funny face on Otsuka whenever he grabbed the ball. Hey, I got a free ball game from the press box out of it, and you got another byline. Win-win.

And to add to the heavy intern prescence in Sunday's paper, add in my feature about Mr. 720 in sports.

As for Cold Hearted Haag, were the kittens before or after the weekly baby seal clubbing? Should we not tell D Magazine about his affinity for using tasers on young children?
