Boys II Men

No, I'm not talking about the R&B group. I'm actually talking about CAMP Boys II Men, an awesome summer camp in DeSoto and the subject of my first story. I went to the church and conducted my interview last Monday, and I must say, I was quite impressed! I actually wanted to enroll in the camp, because the boys looked like they were having so much fun. Sadly, I was not able to because it is an all-boys camp. I also do not want to give up my internship.

I had a lot of fun during the interview - the staffers were all extremely warm and friendly, and the boys were incredibly cute and polite. All 30 or so boys wanted to answer my questions, and they were actually pushing each other over so that they could be interviewed! Needless to say, I have never had such eager participants in an interview, and I must say, it made my job easier!

Coincidentally, I attended an event on Saturday -- the day after my article was published -- that the pastor of the church and camp was also at. Although I had no idea that he was there, he saw me and came over to thank me for writing the story. Apparently, he LOVED it. He introduced me to his wife, children, family, and friends, none of whom could stop gushing over the article. They told me that their phone had not stopped ringing with people interested in the camp and that they think they need to hire someone to just sit and answer the phone all day! At first I was a bit embarrassed, because, in my opinion, it was nothing special. But then I realized how much it meant to them, and I was encouraged.

Seeing their family and how happy my simple story made them, I was reminded why I love writing, because I love giving voices to people who might not have them.

I attended school with Robert (now Pastor Nichols) and his wife Tina. We keep in touch infrequently, but I knew he was preaching now. After reading the story, I passed on the article to other classmates. Hopefully, they will also enjoy the tale of a good guy doing good. Needless to say, I am very proud of Robert and the work he is doing.

It was refreshing to see a well-written story about something positive in our community. That's what I call news!

Keep up the good work.
