Back in the office

Creed.jpg Well, I'm back in the office after being out on assignment late Thursday and early Friday, although I wasn't exactly "tanning in the tropical sun" like Matthew (unless you count the semi-oppressive, humid heat of Mesquite last Thursday).

This weekend saw the publishing of my first paid byline (not counting briefs and unpaid high school sports "Listen Up" correspondence during the school year). In less than one week, I've learned more about the sport of boomerang than I ever thought possible.

Here's an interesting conundrum though. As I was on I-30 headed toward Mesquite for an interview last Thursday, I heard the beginning of a song on the radio that piqued my interest. I turned the song up and listened for a moment, only to realize the song was written and performed by the band Creed. There are only two Creeds in America worth listening to - the Apostles' Creed and Creed Bratton's eponymous character from NBC's The Office.

Now, I turn to the readers and even to my colleagues at GuideLive (Kip, heads up) for help. Does this recent incident make me a bad person? Does this mean I have to turn in my "listener of good music" card? Can I get a verdict from the Internal Affairs blog nation?

I remember there was a time when Creed was actually worth listening to. It's been some time, yes, but they had a couple songs that were worth it. Not that I'd run to iTunes and buy them, but still, I think it's OK to like one or two Creed songs. Now, if you buy the CD, we should probably have an intervention.

I'm still convinced Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder and Creed's frontman are the same guy. I can do a pretty solid impression of both of them, and IT'S THE SAME IMPRESSION. To answer your question though, Creed sucks. A lot.

Hey, Josh, if you aren't doing anything later, would you mind doing an impersonation? Maybe we could record it and post it on the blog.

I've found one of the worst moments in American musical history right here:

And the only reason I remember it is because I recall watching that game (I like to call it SportsDay transcendence). If Stapp beat each syllable any harder, the St. Louis police could have charged him with assault.

Remember when critics said that Scott Stapp was taking on a Jesus persona? (Or did I just make that up?) Either way, I never knew how prophetic Creed was until I just searched YouTube. Turns out they predicted Hurricane Katrina years before it ravaged New Orleans.

But Stapp doesn't appear to be walking on water...

Ross, it's alright. Even as a self-professed "music snob," I believe that every artist/group has at least one song worth listening to, unless its name is Hinder or (and I know I'm gonna get a flurry of hate mail for this) Rascal Flatts. If you were to ever glance at my iPod, you'd notice the usual "cool" groups (Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, The Smiths), the "classic rock" (Beatles, Rolling Stones, the Who), and of course some Motown. But there is also an ever-expanding playlist of guilty pleasures, including Aerosmith's "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing," Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" and of course the aforementioned Creed.

You can keep your card, but I wouldn't rush out and buy the CD (a mistake I made in my naive days in middle school). Oh, and Josh, MadTV has a skit (that's probably YouTube-able) about Scott Stapp and Eddie Vedder (and the possibility they both stole their vocal styles from another singer) that hilarious.

Yeah, Matt, they were the first of the so-called Christian hard rockers to hit it big (a sub-genre I still have trouble believing exists--and this is from someone who's both a Christian and a hard rock fan). I don't know if he was ever compared to Jesus (and if he was, I'm sure his scandal pretty much put an end to that). Anyways, Creed was a band for that time (the early oughts, where nearly anyone could make it on the radio--remember that song "Butterfly"--yeesh!), and now there time is gone.

Wow, I just wrote a whole manifesto in the space of a comment. Goodness. So to review: Ross, the occasional Creed song is just fine.

This post is so weird to me b/c on my way up here this morning, I was listening to, *gasp* Creed! Not actually, I was listening to Mix 102.9 & the unforgettable (ha) "Arms Wide Open" came on. I listened since nothing else was on any other stations (you can only listen to so much talk about Paris!), & I found myself singing along. . . but I can only handle a tiny dose of Creed, so I switched stations half way through & wondered how I could have ever really liked them. (Like Kip, i was slightly confused during my middle school years!)

Hahaha. Found the MadTV bit here:

That may be the only funny thing MadTV has ever done. In this day and age, if your sketch comedy show can't beat the current(ly awful) SNL cast, you should really just quit.
