An "on the record" lunch date
I had lunch with a couple colleagues and friends of colleagues today. They didn’t tell me the conversation was “off the record,” so I’m safe to blog about it. I’m not giving all the details, but I will say we had an interesting conversation about the state of journalism in this country, especially in light of scandals rocking the industry.
We had lunch at an awesome Mexican restaurant in the West End. We opted to sit inside since it looked ominous outside. The department head told me this morning that it’s weird to have this much rain. I’m not big on the heat, but the heat with the rain is just uncomfortable.
I consider it progress that, at the end of my second full week, I can identify a couple Dallas neighborhoods. I’m also feeling a bit more comfortable at work, with a few assignments in the works. It seems as if I am finding my way.
Next week I’m gearing up for a big story, so I’m thinking I won’t be blogging much. Hopefully my fellow interns will come back from the weekend with some good blog posts.
Then again, I am thinking about going to the Dr Pepper museum tomorrow, maybe I’ll come back with a story.

You definitely need to head to the Dr. Pepper Museum in Waco. In my years at Baylor, I didn't go nearly enough. Have yourself a frosty Dr. Pepper float while you are there. And you can get the cans or bottles of the original Dr. Pepper made in Dublin, Texas...it uses pure cane sugar, not the corn syrup you are used to. Upside: tastes tons better and leaves a clean aftertaste. Downside: it is more expensive than the usual kind, but in Waco it does cost less than the grocery stores up this way.

While you're down there you might as well see the bears on Baylor campus, too. It's only a short drive away.

Instead of the Waco museum, head to the old bottling plant in Dublin. It's the only plant in the world that still makes Dr Pepper the old-fashioned way, with cane sugar. Mmmm.

Afterwards, get out of Waco as quickly as possible.
